GRAN CANARIA - SPAIN
6th to 10th of May of 2019
Santa Mª de Guía
Gran Canaria originally Known as "Great Island of Dogs", is the second most populated island of the Canary Islands,. It is one of the seven islands of the Canary archipelago and it is part of Spain. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean, about 150 kilometres off the northwestern coast of Africa and about 1,350 km from Europe.
Gran Canaria was set up by the Canary people, who may have arrived as early as 500 BC. These people called the island “Tamarán´” or “Land of the Brave”. After over a century of European incursions and attempts at conquest, the island was conquered on April 29, 1483, after a campaign that lasted five years, by the Crown of Castile, with the support of Queen Isabel I. The conquest turned out to be an important step towards the expansion of the unified Spain.
The capital city of the island is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It was founded on June 24, 1478, under the name "Real de Las Palmas", by Juan Rejón, head of the invading Castilian army.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus anchored in the Port of Las Palmas and he spent some time on the island on his first trip to the Americas.
Gran Canaria is located southeast of Tenerife and west of Fuerteventura. The island is of volcanic origin, mostly made of fissure vents. Gran Canaria's surface area is 1,560 km² and its maximum elevation is 1,949 metres (Pico de Las Nieves). It has a round shape, with a diameter of approximately 50 km.
The population of the island is about 845,676 with 378,628 (year 2005) of those in the capital city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Gran Canaria is the second crowded island of the Canary Islands, after Tenerife. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital of the province of Las Palmas, and also one of the two capitals of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, along with Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Gran Canaria. It is also a cosmopolitan place as there are people from different languages, countries, and cultures. Nowdays it is a melting pot place.
Gran Canaria is Known for its rich variety of microclimates. Generally speaking though, the average daytime high ranges from 20 °C (68 °F) in winter, to 26 °C (79°F) in summer. However, it is cold in winter, above all, in the midlands and highlands. Some cool nights occur in winter, but lows below 10 °C (50 °F) are unknown near the coast. The climate is still mild inland, but there is occasional frost or snow in.mountainous areas.
This island is called a "Miniature Continent" due to the different climates and wide variety of landscapes along with beautiful beaches and dunes of white sand, contrasting with green ravines and picturesque villages. A third of the island is under protection as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
Santa Mª de Guia
The municipality of Santa María de Guía is situated on the northwest coast of the island of Grand Canary, only 22 kilometres from the capital and well connected with the city centre of the island. With a population of around 14,000 inhabitants and an area of 2.59 square kilometers, it limits with Gáldar on the South and West, with the municipality of Moya on the East and Southeast, and with the Atlantic Ocean on its northern fringe.
It has pleasant temperatures throughout the year in the areas closest to the coast and a colder and more humid climate, in winter, in the areas of lowlands and close to the highlands. Here the landscape is characterized by the alternation of deep ravines and gentle hills, forests and other pastures or agricultural land and some banana tree plantations. It differs from the landscape of the coast that stands out for its erosion and rockiness, where you can also see large cliffs.
It is also a place where you can breath history with a great patrimonial, archaelogical, architectural and artistic value. One of the most interesting places you can visit is “ El Cenobio de Valerón”. It is an Archaelogical Park, situated on the northwest coast between Guía and Moya. It is included in the network of Archaelogical Parks of Grand Canary. It was declared a Historic Artistic Monument in 1978. It was used by the Aborigenes of the Prehispanic times until the Conquest of the island at the end of the 15th century.
Besides, Guía is the birth- place of great artists such as Luján Pérez o Néstor Álamo. Luján Pérez was a sculptor and architect. He was born on May 12th, 1756 and died on December 15th , 1815. He is regarded as one of the greatest figures of sculpture in the Canary Islands, being Canarian imagery his outstanding project. He is considered along with Fernando Estévez, who was his disciple, one of the most important sculptors of the Canary Islands. Among his works, we can see Luján ´s Christ in the main church of Santa María de Guía. Néstor Álamo was a Spanish composer, a journalist and a writer. He was born on February, 27th, 1906 and died on March 24th, 1994. He was one of the greatest and most remarkable artists of Canarian folk music and culture. He was well-known for his research as he made a catalogue of the files of the Inquisition, and for some popular lyrics or songs such as “ Sombra del Nublo” , “ Mariquilla la Perrera”, “ Andrés repásame el motor” , “ La Noche de Arguineguín “, “ Ay Teror qué lindo eres”.
Nowadays, Guía is a modern town where there are a lot of facilities such as sports centres, theatres, theme parks, different highschools, the setting of different Administrations, and the private European University of Fernando Pessoa. However, it is also a place where centenary traditions are maintained such as the handcrafts and the elaboration of the delicious and special cheese, the so-called “ Flor de Guía cheese” . Flor de Guía cheese is a Spanish cheese (Spanish: Queso de Flor de guía). It has Denomination of Origen protection. The cheese is classified as fatty or semi-fatty and made from the milk from Canarian sheep, or mixed up with milk from Canarian cows and/or goats. The milk from the sheep must constitute at least 60% and cows’ milk content must never exceed 40%. Goat milk must never exceed 10% of the mixture. The cheese is presented in flat cylindrical cheeses which normally measure 4–8 cm (1.5-3 inches) high and 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) across and weighing between 2 and 5 kg (4.5-11 pounds). The cheese gets its name after the name of the town Santa María de Guia or Guia. The name of the cheese also refers to the ‘flor’ and juice from the flowerheads of a species of cardoon and globe artichoke that are used to curdle the milk.
Guia is very famous due to the traditional festivals of “La Virgen de Guía” held in August or “La Fiestas de Las Marías” which is celebrated in September. They have the category of Fiesta of National Tourist Interest as an honorary designation given to these festivals or events that offer real interest from the tourism perspective.

Visit to ISTAC ( Canary Statistics Institute- CSTAI)
Students in the fouth year of CSE and the first year of Baccalaureate have visited the CSTAI where they have seen the work that scientists are doing there. They have explained the students how the statistics process works, how to elaborate enquires, data files, analysis of results and so on and so fort. Futhermore, they have talked them about the different profiles that are necessary to work in the centre such as those related to jobs as maths scientists, engineers, computing managers and economics specialists, etc.
The Hour of Code is organized by "Code.org", a non-profit public organization, dedicated to promote participation in schools and institutes of Computer Science.
It is an event in which students will be doing activities to develop Computational Thinking during a teaching session, with the aim of showing that everyone can learn to program, with special attention to increase the number of women and students of disadvantaged groups, fostering problem-solving skills, logic and creativity.
The IES Guia has participated with the students of 1st ESO.
In this first mobility the topic "Mathematics and Art" will be worked on. We decided that we would work on this theme in our culture, that is, we worked on: Mathematics and Pintaderas, Mathematics and La Cueva Pintada and Mathematics and calados canarios. For the realization of this work we have the collaboration of Professor D. José Molina.

In this second mobility the topic "Mathematics and Sports" will be worked on. We decided to work some of the typical Canarian sports, such as: Lucha Canaria, the Canarian ball, Latin sailing ...
For this mobility we have also prepared the logo for the shirts. The logo that we presented was made by the student Danna Gómez Gallardo of 1º ESO a.
During the Christmas period (December 2018) we have worked with the students in our MARE corner. Several activities have been carried out: decoration of our Christmas tree with mathematical operations that students of 1st ESO have had to carry out, mathscards for the students participating in the project and a Christmas video, with the collaboration of the CLIL students, the choir of the center and the students who have participated in the different mobilities. We have used this video to congratulate Christmas to our partner countries. By reading the QR code you can watch the video.
In this school year we have introduced gamification in the classroom and we have done it with 4th year ESO students, using the learning situation carried out by Sergio Darias "Factorizando al mosntruo".
It has been a very pleasant and satisfying experience for both teachers and students, although these were a bit reluctant at first.
We hope to continue working and start innovating in this field.
Several teachers of the IES Guia have participated in this course, organized by the Ministry of Education with the collaboration of OPEEC, with the purpose of helping us and giving us guidelines when designing and carrying out the entire process to request an Erasmus Project.

Participation of the IES Guia in the Internalization Workshops of the centers and monitoring of the K2 Erasmus Projects.
In this quarter we have worked the games with the students of 4th ESO.
They had to build a board game (could be based on an existing one or create a new one) and the content of the game had to be mathematical.
The students have created several very interesting games. Some of them are the following:
We have also made some sessions to play and they have been the ones who have evaluated the different games.

Mathematics is more present than it seems in our daily life, not only for the need to
"take account" simpler when paying something, for example, but also manifesting through the most varied geometric shapes , which we often do not pay attention to.
Mathematics is a science unknown by society in general and that entails its generalized rejection. Showing mathematics as something close would be a step towards socializing them. This course aims to demonstrate how mathematics is present in our immediate environment, providing teachers with tools to bring the beauty and harmony of mathematics to students.
The course was taught by Professor José Molina González, who has collaborated several times with us. From here we take the opportunity to thank you for your time and dedication.
Some professors of the IES Guia have participated in the course and we have also taken advantage of it to design a mathematical walk through our town (Santa María de Guía) and the yinkana that we have offered to our members as one more activity of our Erasmus week.
The OPEEC has organized these days in order to monitor our projects, solve our doubts and see what our concerns are. To this end, he was assisted by the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr. David Pérez-Dionis Chinea.
We went to this show where different workshops, stands of different univiersidades present on the island, live music and talks were organized.
We attend the talks related to Erasmus projects. There many children told their experience and encouraged everyone to participate.
The IES Guia participates in the Youth Week organized by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.

Preparing our Second Transnational Meeting in Montesarchio (Italy) December 2019
We were in agreement on the dates of the mobilities to be carried out during this course and the activities that we would have to carry out.
Preparing our fourth and last Mobility in GRAN CANARIA (Spain) May 2019
We have been preparing the last mobility of our project for several months, this will be in our land, Gran Canaria, and we have to be the hosts.
The guys have designed and prepared our new corner Erasmus + MARE, in collaboration with our partner and professor of Geography and History Hilario Rodríguez.
Also the boys and girls of the choir of our high school, together with the music teacher,
Alicia Vega, have been preparing a performance where they will sing typical songs of
our partner countries and there will be some surprise.
The 2nd ESO students have been our ambassadors in this mobility and they have been investigating the traditional games of our land. They have made a power point about it and have exposed it to our partners. They have also been responsible for developing the games that we have given to our partners. They have also guided and taught our center.
Several students of the center together with Professor Manolo García, have prepared a musical performance, with reading poems, about adolescence and the relationship with their peers and social networks to make it as the closing of our Erasmus + week.
Also the students of 2nd ESO have prepared the mahorí rite but referring to a better world, for equality, tolerance and protection of the environment.
The fourth Mobility
The management team welcomes our partners and students. Then the choir of the high school acts and they are given the material and some gifts.
Then the students of 2nd ESO taught them the institute. We had breakfast and we went to the town hall where the mayor and the councilor of education would welcome us. Our colleague Lola Alonso was the translator.
Through the streets of our municipality the students participated in a gym where they had to solve mathematical problems and see with mathematical eyes the architecture and art that we found around us.
We returned to the high school and had lunch, in the company of some host families and teachers of the center. Then we went by bus to visit the north coast. We take this opportunity to make a mathematical photography contest.
On Tuesday the students presented their presentations related to "Maths and traditional games".
Then we went to Gáldar and did a mathematical tour of the city in the company of Professor José Molina, who was our guide.
Then we did a work shop in "Cueva Pintada" about "Pintaderas". In our first move to Italy- Montesarchio- we worked on "Maths and Art" and our work was to work on the art that appears in the Cave Painted from a mathematical point of view, as well as the paint and embroidery of the Canaries. José Molina helped us and that is why he accompanies us today, giving a mathematical touch to these visits. Then we had time to have lunch and to finish the day we visited La Cueva Pintada.
Today we have gone on an excursion to know a little more about our land and a veil that is not all sun and beach. Today we have been in the midlands of Gáldar and Guía. We have visited the "Cheese Museum", one of the typical products of our municipality, there they have been able to know the process that is followed in the making of the cheese and they have also tasted it. We have then visited Artenara, Tejeda and stopped at Fontanales to eat. We ended up on the coast of San Felipe giving us a dip.
Today has been a sun and beach day. We have gone to the south of the island, specifically to Puerto Rico, in the municipality of Mogán, where we have enjoyed an aquatic activity "kayak and paddle surf".
Then we went to Maspalomas to know one of the most typical places on the island: The dunes, the pond and the Maspalomas lighthouse. Here we have taken the opportunity to have lunch, to take a bath, to relax with these beautiful views ...
And as a last stop, already on the way back, we have been in the area of Las Canteras and the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, walking some and others have taken advantage of it to go shopping.
Explanation and exchange of the games prepared by the different members of the project.
Finally, the guys from the IES Guide have offered them three performances. The first: "I, others and my dreams." The aim of it is a reflection on some of the characteristics of the period of adolescence, using music and literature as a resource. This consists of three parts and the one that has represented the people today has been the one corresponding to "The others"
The second has been the performance of the choir and finally the boys of 2nd ESO have offered us the ritual mahorí "jaca", but they speak of equality, of tolerance, care and protection of the environment, peace. .. In short, a better world.
Next we had the diplomas delivery and closing of the ceremony. Then we all went to lunch at Agaete.
